Independent engineering

RaceMetrica

Independent real-time athlete timing, tracking, and event-analytics platform piloted with limited access at more than ten events.

Context

Live-event tracking needs to remain useful despite inconsistent LTE coverage and changing event conditions.

Accountability

Own functional and non-functional requirements, system design, implementation, review, testing, release approval, deployment, and production support.

Architecture and delivery model

  1. 1 Responsive TypeScript/JavaScript platform with Node.js services, React, WebSockets, and MongoDB as the primary database.
  2. 2 Retries, acknowledgements, differential updates, event ordering, local storage, and reconnect/resynchronisation flows.
  3. 3 Live tracking designed for up to 50 simultaneously tracked athletes per start.

Operations and evidence

  • Piloted in production with limited access at more than ten events.
  • Supported an event with more than 80 athletes across separate starts and eight timing checkpoints.
  • Uses Python and pandas for race-data and post-event analysis, alongside real field constraints that validate resilience and operational design decisions.
